Same item, same price, two fee structures. eBay charges a per-order fee that Walmart does not, and the categories do not line up — so the cheaper marketplace flips as the price moves.
eBay's fee is a percentage plus a per-order fee — $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above that, charged once per order. Walmart's referral fee is a percentage and nothing else. On a $5 item that fixed $0.30 is 6% of the sale on its own, which is why Walmart is usually cheaper at the bottom of the price range even in categories where its percentage is higher.
At the top of the range the percentages take over, and they are not comparable category by category. eBay charges 13.6% on most categories with no tier break until $7,500. Walmart charges by portion in several categories — jewellery is 20% on the first $250 and 5% above it — so its effective rate falls as the price rises while eBay's stays flat. That is a crossing, and this page solves for exactly where it happens rather than describing it.
The first version of this calculator looked at the two ends of the price range and reported "no crossover" when both ends agreed. That is wrong whenever the lines cross an even number of times, which happens often here: eBay's per-order fee makes it dearer on very small orders, cheaper in the middle, and dearer again at the top of a portion-tiered Walmart category. The tool now scans the whole range and reports every price where the answer changes.
